Chapter 1. Columbus
«Nowadays, every single human being on Earth and the Colonies has the 'palm'-system embedded in their bodies; every newborn will have the set surgically implanted inside their hands within thirty days of their birth»—said Dr.Dworak, with a monotone, indifferent tone. «The main chip is usually located between the thumb and the index of the right hand, not too close to the metacarpal bones. Each of the fingertip-interfaces are connected to the main chip by Heinz-Loop wires. For those subjects in which hand implants are not possible, the system is usually embedded in the cranium, with the main chip right below the zygomatic arch, and the interfaces spread in front of the nasal bone, the sphenoid bone, the zygomatic bone, the maxilla and mandible. Other geometries are possible, and some interesting properties have been observed from subjects with palm-systems inserted around the parietal bone.»
She stopped, realized her glass was empty, pointed her bony index in the direction of the bar, then motioned to the glass, and in a matter of seconds, one of the droids reached for the bottle of sparkling water, moved toward Dworak's back—through her right side, as a good waiter—, and poured the water in.
Forty-five minutes passed by, and surprisingly none of the seventeen top executives of MGSG, or any other scientists in the audience had asked any question. Dr. Dworak was almost ready to present the first “secure” application of the so-called “Spooky Frequencies” project: «It first happened during the experiment on radiation by high frequencies, as we targeted the waves into one of the porous media, the BLK-1213—used to provide insulation for the aircrafts employed in the lightning and atmospheric electricity research. To our surprise and horror, a piercing yell came from somewhere in the “testing-box”—the room where the material was being bombarded... only there was nobody inside the room. Consecutive experiments resulted in similar phenomena, and most of our personnel decided to abandon the project and be assigned to other tasks. Some other colleagues were not so lucky: Dr.Frederick Goldberg had a stroke as a consequence of one this episodes, and passed away on his way to the hospital; Miss Santaldaner, one of our lab assistants, had to be interned into a psychiatric ward, and so far no treatment has been successful to bring her back to normality.»
Rumors were spread that her condition was produced as a consequence to exposure to either wave bombarding, or the audible phenomena derived from one of those experiments. The Government is still investigating the matter, and a severe penalty to MGSG was to be expected soon unless the project “Spooky Frequency” had any significant development and showed potential applications to the palm-system technologies. For more than three years, top-researchers Dr. Jarn Dworak and Dr. Patrick O'Neal had been designing novel tools and experiments to deeper into this unknown field, and the accidents could mean either disaster or complete success.
On Friday, Dr. O'Neal communicated to the board that they had finally obtained some degree of control over the effects of some frequencies, and prompted their executives and other researchers in the company to meet his colleague, Dr.Dworak, in the conference room for a quick introduction. An image of serenity, ausence of tension on her face, speech or manners, she continued speaking: «MGSG stopped momentarily the experiments, studied the implications, realized that Dr.O'Neal and myself were capable of coping with the situation and could work on our own, and gave us green light again. Consequently, they granted permission to all our assistants who solicited to be relocated to other experiments. From that point on, no other researchers other than Patrick, myself and three graduate students has done any theoretical or practical work in this field.»
Jarn switched back to the math part of the talk. She was really good at entertaining her audience in spite of her presumed indifferent tone; a quick look to the room and she was able to identify the background of the listeners, and according to it, she would balance the content and speech patterns so every single person in the room felt as if she was speaking directly to them. She addressed the “pointer functions” of her palm-system, issued a change of page command to the screen, and continued: «In december of the same year, Dr.O'Neal came up with two modifications to the model; here and here»—she pointed at the ridge coefficients of the decomposition of the sixth and eighth generating functions on the screen, and paused meanwhile the old equations turned into the new ones—«and in the new experiments we recorded new effects: the 'yelling' turned into... 'cursing', 'crying', even 'coherent short sentences', 'yawning'...»
Somebody at the audience gasped, but most of them just shook their heads, perhaps incredulously, perhaps in astonishment. «It is then when we realized that we were actually 'contacting' with somebody or something, and that the use of those high-pitch frequencies from the palm-chip were acting somehow as a radio transmitter behavior modifier. What we couldn't find out is what or whom those waves were being transmitted to. Somebody at the building? Nobody complained, or showed in the security video tapes, so that hypothesis was quickly discharged. Somebody at city level? No complaints either were registered with the police or the hospitals. Who, then, was being affected by our signals?»
Dr.O'Neal entered the room quietly from one of the back doors, so nobody except the speaker could spot him. In spite of being heavily built, he could move as smoothly as a cat if he wanted. He found his way to one of the big seats on the side, while Jarn proceeded to the end of her speech: «The breakthrough occurred when we decided to change the projector operators from the usual averaging, to the median. From that point on, we were able to process the signals, not only in the usual Lp spaces for p greater than or equal to one, but for all p positive. The first experiment in which we tested the median operator for values of p less than one, we obtained no auditive response... but a physical one: the door and windows of the testing-box vibrated considerably. Small variations of the parameter p within the same interval led to different physical phenomena: broken glasses, scratches on walls and door, etc.»
«We designed a new set of experiments in which interaction of the phenomena with life animals was to be tested. We modified the palm-system so a small amount of BLK-1213 is located on one end of the main chip, joined to it by a Heintz-Hensen-Loop micro-tube, and attached them to the skeleton of our guinea-pigs. Bombarding of the material in this modified palm-systems is done directly from the main chip inside the tube. The effects were observed to match the previous results in the testing box. Experiments with a single animal allowed us to compute the area of influence of the physical phenomena, correlated to the intensity of the waves, the parameter p, and the amount of BLK-1213. This is a table and graphs with the results.»
The moment everybody was expecting was close. Dr.Dworak gave the audience some time to download the contents on the board to the hard-drives in their palm-systems, reached for the glass of water, cleared her throat and continued, in the same indifferent tone: «The next set of experiments were designed to test the interference of such devices: we would place two animals with modified palm-system within the same area of influence, let's say, subjects Alpha and Beta. We triggered the bombarding device in subject Alpha: there was no interference whatsoever. In all of the cases, subject Alpha remained untouched, while subject Beta suffered the corresponding effects: some were paralyzed, some were violently pushed out of the influence area of subject Alpha, some floated a few inches over the floor, as if gravity had abandoned them... and some just gagged and chocked to death, unless we stopped the flow of waves into the testing-box.»
She stopped, realized her glass was empty, pointed her bony index in the direction of the bar, then motioned to the glass, and in a matter of seconds, one of the droids reached for the bottle of sparkling water, moved toward Dworak's back—through her right side, as a good waiter—, and poured the water in.
